Presentation of the editor :

Every day in hockey is great; only one day is the greatest.

If you’re a hockey player or fan, you know the significance of winning the Stanley Cup or an Olympic gold medal. You know that almost every kid dreams of one day playing for his or her country, or of being drafted by an NHL team. That all-important first big game and first goal are magical and compelling milestones. The NHL dream, the national team dream, the dream of game-seven drama or gold-medal glory define the game and represent the climactic moments of years of dedication.

But the dreams we imagine are not necessarily the same as those of the men and women we revere. Veteran journalist and hockey analyst Scott Morrison has interviewed 50 great hockey people—players and coaches. Managers, and even a decorated general in Canada’s military—and discovered that what a player considers his or her greatest single day in hockey is often not at all what we think that greatest day would be.

Gretzky surpassing Howe? Hasek winning Olympic gold? Crosby winning the Hart and Art Ross Trophies? Readers are in for a big surprise!

The engaging and honest stories in Hockey Night in Canada: My Greatest Day reveal a deeply personal love for the game that will entertain us, move us, and often surprise up. Familiar names? Yes. Common themes? Yes. Expected answers? No.

Featuring full-colour photographs and informative sidebars, Hockey Night in Canada: My Greatest Day is a wonderful trip down memory lane—a must-read for hockey fans everywhere.

Presentation of the author :

Scott Morrison, is a 25-year veteran hockey journalist and recipient of the Hockey Hall of Fame's 2006 Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award. After spending more than 11 years as a hockey writer and columnist at the paper, Morrison became Sports Editor in 1991 and led the section to being named one of North America's top-ten sports sections in 1999 — the first sports section in Canada to receive the AP Sports Editors North American Award. Morrison has authored several hockey books and served two terms as President of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association.

Pierre’s evaluation of the book :

a) First you should know that concerning Hockey I am a very subjective person.

Here is one of my texts.
This one was translated from french and published by The National Post :

The Creed of the Canadiens
National Post

I believe in the Canadiens, the club almighty

Creator of Heaven, earth and the Holy Flannel

And in Maurice Richard, our Saviour

Who was conceived of sane mind

Born for the good of the homeland

Suffered under Clarence Campbell

Was crucified for a bad decision

That almost killed us

And ascended into Heaven

And is seated at the right hand of the great Referee

From thence he shall come to judge the good players and the cowards

I believe in the Holy NHL,

The Communion of old Canadiens heroes

The forgiveness of years without the Stanley Cup

The resurrection during the next playoffs

And glory everlasting.

Amen.

Pierre Castonguay, responding Oct. 14, 2008 to an article in Le Devoir about Professor Bauer's course on the religion of the Montreal Canadiens.

b) My opinion about the book as a hockey fan :

I have cried reading many pages of that book and I was toutched by Scotty Bowan pages.
Here is an article who speaks about the book and Scotty Bowman in it :

This paper shows you the quality of the testimonies you will find in the book.. If you are a hockey fan and a fan of Hockey Night in Canada, this book is for you. You will be able to read the best moments of many hockey players from Dave Andreychuk to Hayley Wickenheiser (yes, it toutches feminine hockey also). Of course you will find Sidney Crosby, Wayne Gretzky, Alexander Ovechkin, Bobby Orr, and so on...
You will also reach to the heart of our nation, our passion and our dedication for hockey..
The numerous photos are splendid and comes from the archives of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Even the ink used to print this glossy book smells good. A pure monument of dedication and contemplation about priceless hockey moments.

For those who want to know what makes hockey fans cherish this sport, this book is also an introduction to fanship.

My appreciation : 8/10.

It makes a great gift too.

Pierre
